Creating Christmas Tablescapes

Christmas is the perfect opportunity to get creative when it comes to dining at home. With so many opportunities to have people over, one of the most fun aspects of the festivities can be dressing a table in order to adds a little touch of magic to a family meal.

This year, we’re particularly loving the simplicity of natural centre pieces, such as planted hyacinth, amaryllis and narcissus bulbs. The earthiness and greenery create quite a soft aesthetic, but you could glam it up a bit by planting your bulbs in gilded votives, crystals glasses or coloured vases. To our mind they look simply sensational in pale pots, surrounded by pretty pewter candleholders, hurricane lamps and a garland of fairylights – either laid centrally along a table or nestled inside a bell jar. Finish the look with finely polished silverware and you really will have a winter wonderland from which to devour your banquet.

For those in need of a bit of bling this Christmas time, get your hands on a sequinned tablecloth. This fabulous base layer will automatically add wow factor to your festive feast, which you can add to with rose coloured glassware and gilded charger plates. Since the table linen will be spectacular enough in itself, we suggest keep the blooms to sweet little pomander bouquets suspended across the back of each chair which, in this case, ought to either be a complimentary chiavari or inconspicuous ghost design.

If you favour a more traditional design for your Christmas table, why not think of alternative ways to incorporate red and green into your scheme? Consider creating a monograph for each of your guests out of leftover fir or fresh sprigs of rosemary, which will also contribute a fantastic aroma to the room. Use red berries to create centre pieces around candles or sashes of ruby ribbon as napkin ties. Opt for bulbous floral displays of mistletoe branches surrounded by clouds of creamy baby’s-breath.

Whilst part of us wants to advise that Christmas is a time when you can get away with excess, we also find that the simpler the design scheme, the more beautiful it will be. We love tables that seem effortlessly elegant and that offer a feast for all the senses by having something that looks, smells and feels wonderful in order to complement the delicious food that you’re going to be enjoying as well.
